Hands-on Workshop: Varroa Mite Monitoring & Management

Varroa mites are one of the biggest threats to honeybee survival in the US, and successful backyard beekeeping nowadays requires a thorough understanding of the problem. In this workshop, we will take an in-depth look at how mites operate, how they harm our bees and how to effectively manage them. There will be an emphasis on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.

You will suit-up and work in the hives alongside us as we monitor for mites, determine mite thresholds and demonstrate some mite management techniques!

We will cover:

  • The history of varroa mites

  • Varroa mite lifecycles

  • Vectored diseases

  • Mite monitoring techniques

  • IPM strategies

This course will be operated with an assumed knowledge of beginning beekeeping topics.
